They should not be confused with mechanical switches, which are composed of plastic parts and copper instead of a circuit and a substrate. Membrane switches have a low profile, sealing ability, and ease of cleaning. Membrane switches can be used in conjunction with other control systems such as keyboards, touch screens, and lighting, and they can be as complex as membrane keyboards and switch panels found in mobile phones and computers.
